Notes on event | At 10.54 hours on 2 Oct 1942 the unescorted Aneroid (Master Ingvald Kristian Johannessen Eide) was hit by one G7a torpedo from U-175 on the starboard side at #4 hatch just abaft the engine room. The explosion opened a huge hole in the bulkhead between #4 and #5 hold causing this hold to flood. At 11.15 hours she sank by the stern about 130 miles off Georgetown. Five crew members and one armed guard died. The boats #2 and #4 had both problems during launching and swamped. The occupants were picked up by the boat #1, which was launched earlier. The boat #3 in command of the master with 25 crewmen and four armed guards was picked up by the Yugoslavian steam merchant Ivan at 23.00 hours on 2 October and landed at Georgetown. The occupants of boat #1, ten crewmen and four armed guards were picked up by the Hondurian steam merchant Olambala at 14.00 hours on 4 October and were landed at Paramaribo five days later. | ||
