Notes on event

At 18.30 hours on 21 April 1943 the Scebeli (Master Julius G. Lysøe) in station #41 of convoy ON-178 was hit in the bow on the port side by one of two torpedoes from U-191 and quickly developed a heavy list to port. The crew abandoned ship in three lifeboats and stayed near the ship to search for survivors in the water. One man had been killed in the explosion and another drowned. HMS Hurricane (H 06) (Cdr E.C. Bayldon, DSC, RN) and HMS Kale (K 241) (LtCdr G.W. Houchen, OBE, RNR) unsuccessfully chased the attacker and after two hours returned to the slowly sinking ship. The frigate picked up the survivors and landed them at Argentia, Newfoundland on 26 April.
