At 15.14 hours on 25 June 1944, U-984 fired a Gnat at the ships of the 5th Escort Group and hit the HMS Goodson (K 480) (A/LtCdr J.W. Cooper, RNR (retired)) in the stern. She was towed to Portland by HMS Bligh (K 467) (T/Lt W.B. de Quincey, RNVR) and declared a total loss. In October 1944 the ship was returned to the US Navy, but sold to be broken up at Belfast in January 1947.
