| Notes on loss | At 11.40 hours on 21 Aug, 1944, U-480 fired a Gnat at an unknown convoy southeast of the Isle of Wight and thought that she had sunk a frigate. In fact, the corvette HMCS Alberni (K 103) (A/LtCdr I. H. Bell, RCNVR), on A/S patrol off the Normandy beaches, was struck on the port side aft of the engine room and sank within 30 seconds. Three officers and 28 ratings were rescued by the British torpedo boats HMS MTB-469 and HMS MTB-470 and taken to Portsmouth where the two injured men were treated. Four officers and 55 ratings were lost. | ||
