Notes on loss At 04.56 hours on 3 Jun, 1940, U-37 opened fire with all weapons on the neutral Snabb (Master Hannes Gustafsson) about 300 miles west of Cape Finisterre. That the vessel is neutral was noticed only after she sent a distress signal with her name, because the Finnish flag on the side of the vessel was not illuminated. The U-boat immediately ceased fire and sank the ship about one hour later with gunfire after the crew abandoned ship in two lifeboats. The second officer was killed. The master and 19 crew members (16 of them wounded) were later picked up by the Greek steam merchant Kyriakoula and landed at Cork on 6 June.

* Estimated position shown here is based on positions of losses in a roughly the same German grid code. It may be a bit off but should give a good idea as to where the attack took place.
