| History | Built as American destroyer escort USS Oswald (DE 71) of the Buckley-class. On 29 Sep, 1943, she was transferred to the Royal Navy, renamed HMS Affleck (K 362) and served in the 1st Escort Group. On 25 Feb, 1944, she sank U-91 (Hungershausen) together with the HMS Gore (K 481) and HMS Gould (K 476) also of the 1st EG. On 1 Mar, 1944, U-358 (Manke) was sunk after a 38 hours battle between the U-boat and the HMS Affleck (K 362), HMS Gould (K 476), HMS Gore (K 481) and HMS Garlies (K 475), the latter two have to left for Gibraltar 8 hours before the U-boat was sunk. Then the HMS Gould (K 476) was sunk by a Gnat and immediately after the attack of U-358 the lone HMS Affleck (K 362) was able to sink her. On 16 Mar, 1944, she sank U-392 (Schümann) together with the HMS Vanoc (H 33) and three American PBY-5 Catalina aircraft of VP-63, which used MAD to locate the U-boat.
On 27 Apr, 1944, the frigate rescued 54 survivors together with the HMS Bentley (K 465) from the Colin, which had been sunk by U-859 (Jebsen) one day earlier, and transferred them to the British rescue ship Accrington after they rejoined the convoy SC-157 (Colin was a straggler from this convoy). | ||
| Notes on loss | At 14.14 hours on 26 Dec, 1944, U-486 fired three Gnats at the 1st Escort Group on patrol off Cherbourg and observed hits after 1 minute 39 seconds and 1 minute 41 seconds and heard a third detonation after 7 minutes. Meyer claimed two destroyers sunk and a corvette damaged. In fact the HMS Affleck (K 462) and the HMS Capel (K 470) were hit. The latter sank and the other was towed to port, but declared a total loss. After the war the HMS Affleck (K 462) returned to the US Navy in Britain, where she was sold on 24 Jan, 1947 and served as mercantile hulk Nostra Senora de la Luz until 1970, when she was broken up. | ||
