History Completed in December 1904 as Courtland. 1908 renamed Grotius and 1910 renamed Pauline. 1915 renamed Earl Granard (GY 35) for J.N. & H. Bacon, Grimsby. 1930 renamed Castleton (GY 449) for T.C. & F. Moss Ltd, Grimsby. In November 1939 requisitioned by the Admiralty as A/S trawler, returned to owner in January 1940.
Notes on loss On 28 Jun, 1940, the Castleton was reported missing in the Orkneys. The only U-boat operating in that area was U-102, which was lost during the patrol and did not report her successes.

* Estimated position shown here is based on positions of losses in a roughly the same German grid code. It may be a bit off but should give a good idea as to where the attack took place.
