Notes on loss At 12.50 hours on 24 Sep, 1939, the unescorted Hazelside (Master Charles Henry Davis) was torpedoed by U-31 southeast of Fastnet. The ship then tried to get away at full speed, but the U-boat stopped the ship with gunfire and sunk her later with a coup de grāce. The master and 11 crew members were lost. 22 crew members landed at Schull near Baltimore, Co. Cork.
