History | Completed in May 1920 as Norwegian Saphir for P. Lindoe & Co, Haugesund. 1922 sold to Sweden and renamed Ferm for Dan Brostrom, Gothenburg. 1930 sold to Denmark and renamed Astra for C.P. Jensen, Copenhagen. In May 1940 taken over by Britain and renamed Astra II by the Ministry of War Transport (MoWT). | ||
Notes on event | At 01.40 hours on 29 Aug 1940 the Astra II (Master Carl Niels Nielson) in convoy OA-204 was torpedoed and sunk by U-100 148 miles northwest of Bloody Foreland. Four crew members and one gunner were lost. The master and 19 crew members were picked up by HMS Gleaner (J 83) (LtCdr H.P. Price, DSO, RN). | ||
