| History | At 07.48 hours on 8 Jul, 1942, the unescorted Hartismere (Master Kenneth Carrick Lone) was torpedoed and sunk by gunfire by the Japanese submarine I-10 (Kayahara) west of Madagascar in 18°00S/41°22E, while en route from Philadelphia to Alexandria via Lourenço Marques (4 July) with 8000 tons of general cargo. The master, 39 crew members and seven gunners landed at Caldeta Point Lighthouse, Portuguese East Africa. | ||
| Notes on loss | At 00.23 hours on 29 Aug, 1940, U-100 fired torpedoes at the convoy OA-204 148 miles northwest of Bloody Foreland, damaged the Hartismere and sank the Dalblair. The Hartismere was hit underneath the bridge on the starboard side by one torpedo. She was escorted to the Clyde by HMS Gleaner (J 83). | ||
