In the morning of 9 October, U-58 hit the vessel with a coup de grāce and the Confield was abandoned, but remained afloat. The wreck was later shelled and sunk by the British sloop HMS Weston (L 72) (Cdr J.G. Sutton). The master and four crew members were picked up by the sloop and 31 crew members by the British corvette HMS Periwinkle (K 55) (LtCdr P.G. MacIver) and landed at Londonderry. One crew member was lost. | ||
