| Notes on loss | At 05.12 hours on 21 May 1941, the Marconi (Master Frederick Emanuel Hailstone), dispersed from convoy OB-322, was hit by one torpedo from U-98 and sank after 33 minutes south-southeast of Cape Farewell. The ship had already been missed by the same U-boat at 18.36 hours on 20 May. Eleven men were lost. The survivors abandoned ship in the lifeboats but eight of them died before they were picked up by USCGC General Greene (WPC 140) and landed at St. Johns, where three others died in a hospital. 19 crew members and three gunners had been lost. The master, 54 crew members and one gunner survived. | ||
