Attacks on U-66 during this patrol
3 Aug 1943
At 21.35 hours, the boat was surprised by a Avenger/Wildcat team (VC-1 USN) from USS Card in the Central Atlantic. The aircraft made several strafing runs and one depth charge apparently exploded directly under the boat. The II.WO Oblt Kurt Schütze and Mtrgfr Erich Lorenz were killed and MechGfr Heinz Nitsch died of wounds during the night. The commander and FzS Pfaff were seriously and the I.WO and five ratings were slightly wounded. U-117 was ordered to meet U-66 three days later for medical assistance und to transfer a WO as replacement. (Sources: Ritschel)
