Waterline and Under

I can\'t seem to get a definative answer on this -

I am trying to find out what the guidelines for the underside color of the Type VII-C\'s. I have some references that show them painted red with a black bootstripe, and others that show all dark gray, no bootstripe. My question is this: what dictated the variance in color (date, age, simplification, etc.) and were there other variants? Where can I find out more information regarding painting guidelines and other information?

Thank you all in advance, who, I might add, helped greatly with my search for 88mm gun plans. Let\'s try this again.

Best, always.
