On occassions the efforts of the LI on a uboat was rewarded with a decoration. Firstly if they had conducted several patrols the awards of the EK 1st & 2nd class would have been awarded. Several LI\'S went on to be awarded the Knights cross for continued outstanding service over many patrols or for continued feats that helped to save the U-Boat. It was probably up to the commander to nominate a LI or other member of the crew for higher awards following an act of outstanding achievement. The Knights cross was not always awarded though despite the nomination. The LI of U-124 was nominated for the Knights Cross after fixing the diesels when they broke down in mid ocean and the only option that seemed likely was the scuttling of the boat. He was awarded the German Cross in Gold for this act. (Source: Grey Wolf, Grey Sea ).
The award of the German Cross In Gold appears to have been an award that was awarded to fill the gap between the EK1&2 and the Knight Cross though I do not know if any set act of gallantry or effort was required to receive it. Again it may have been at the recommendation of the commanding officer.
