Dear Art and Meg!
Thanks for your great replies and comments.
It even crossed my mind what I´ve been thinking when I heard of U-571 for the first time. I was very pleased about the chance to see a completely new sub-movie after a long time, although I knew (thanks to the trailers and cutups) that it would be more an action film than a serious war-movie like Das Boot or maybe Saving Private Ryan. Nevertheless I expected to see an interesting and exciting film, but what I got was totally devastating. The only thing that prevented me from leaving the cinema prematurely was the fact that I payed 20 DM (10€) for this crap!
It´s so annoying to wait years for a sub-movie, that seems to be promising but finally turns out to be one of the most piteous movies ever!
I´m imploringly hoping that there´s a serious director/producer (maybe a German again) in the near future who tries to insist in Petersen´s steps and realizes a great anti war movie, that not only shows the human side, but also deals with a completely new part of the u-boat-war. What about the notorious Laconia-incident or the fantastic voyage of U-862 for example? Wouldn´t these interesting stories be worth filming it?
Regards, Jan
