sorry, still can not answer your question precisely.
But if I may please quote you:

Just for that very reason PETERSEN had virtually all his crew trained by the respective former “real” crew – members in “basic – training”, be that the diesel – people, LI, the torpedo – guys and so on.

In addition PETERSEN had his sound - technicians kind of “locked” up with the old hands to make sure the sound came around as realisticly as possible.
