Sobral had sailed from Dakar in convoy HD12 on 14 November 1917 and was unable to keep up and fell out of the convoy almost immediately. The commanding officer of the ocean escort Almanzora made some very unflattering comments about the ship saying that it should never have been allowed on an ocean convoy.
