You are right
I am working in a shipchandler company and by extension we usually call typhone
(tifón in spanish) to all ship´s main whistle/signal horn.
I don´t know certainly but think the name comes from a Swedish commercial
company who built whistles/signal horns named Tifón/Typhone.
There are another examples about one commercial mark from one specific manufacturer converted into common names despite being made by others manufacturers:
Ferodos for all lining brake strips
Delcos for all car´s electric distributors
