Hi Clarence,
1) I shall scan an almost topview of the bridge of a type VII and email it to you tomorrow.
2) The hatchway is directly forward of the sky periscope (aft one), but slightly to port of the centerline! The periscopes are on the centerline. Contrary to your description, the hatchcover is hinged on it's after end at (about 170 degr. pivot point), so that in it's opened position it is resting against the base of the periscope. Actually the periscope base has a spring loaded hook at abt 2' height automatically latching on to the hatch cover when open. The hinges of the hatch cover is also spring loaded counteracting it's weight. Rgds, RB
