Einsamer,
From what I can see on the picture I have from U-101 is that it had a fairly large emblem on the front of the tower. It looks to me as a giant with a sword in his left hand and his right hand on his right upperleg, both knies bent slightly inward. It looks as if the giant wears short troushers (kurze hoze) and no shirt. The emblem is heavy weathered but the features are recognizable. The picture is b/w so I can't say anyting about colours.
I cannot send the picture because I have no scanner. It is on page 40 of U-Boats in the Atlantic by Paul Beaver.
As for your method of painting the emblems. By hand with paintingbrushes as discribed by you is very good possible but you'll need a steady hand and a sharp eye.
