U47 top grey October 1939
Date: December 17, 2002 03:09PM

Can anybody tell me what shade of grey was used on U47's conning tower and upper hull on the 17th/21st of October 1939? I have studied many B&W photos of U47 on these dates and cannot determine the shade of grey or how much blue(if any) was included in this paint.
Had the standard wartime Hellgrau 50 light grey colour (RAL 7001 FS36373 or FS36375) that this forum has suggested was standard during the war been applied to U-boats at this early stage of the war? Perhaps during October 1939 U47 was in Dunkelgrau 51, a medium blue-grey (RAL7000 FS35237) that some sources have suggested was used before the outbreak of war? Or was it some other grey?
I would welcome advice on this subject as models of U47 have been painted in various shades of grey, and I don't know which is correct for October 1939.
Thank you,
Dougie Martindale
