U Boat decks

Hello, I´m about to buy the new Revell 1/72 Type VIIC model and, although I have quite experience in models, submarines are rather new for me. As far as I know, the decks were of wooden construction but,were they painted or left in their natural colour? Did this depend of the VII version (for example, I see some differences between the decks of U-995 in the Gallery and the deck of U-96 in "Das Boot", the first seems to be in natural wood and the latter painted in gray).
