This is what German Kriegsmarine said due to paint of Type VII-decks in march 1943, seems like there were two different kind of decks, both wooden and iron:

e) Oberdeck:
Holzdeck: Imprägniert mit einem geeigneten Konservierungsmittel
schwarz
(wooden deck: impregnate with appropriate preservative black)
Eisendeck :2 Mal Blei mennige, spezial schnell trocknend
2 Mal trittfeste Außendeckfarbe Tr.D. 59
(iron deck:two times red lead, special quick drying
two times step-proof exterior deck paint Tr.D. 59
