RELATIVE grays for U-boat Type VIIC ...

I've done the research, asked the questions, read some very good material suggested (and provided) by the members of this board, and now have a final U-boat color question (well, probably pretty close to final).
I've come down to three Tamiya rattlecans, a light, medium and dark gray. The light is for the conning tower and above the waterline, but I am vascillating on the other two.
The Q: In depicting a "used" U-boat, should the deck be DARKER or LIGHTER than the lower hull? I had been convinced that the deck should be the middle gray, but now am not so sure.
TIA for any help; God willing, this will be the greatest quandry I'll face in a long and fruitful life! :^)
