I've read that the preservative used on the wood on U-boat decks was black but quickly became charcoal color with weathering. With more exposure to the elements a brown tinge would develop. The longer it weathered the lighter and browner it became. Surfaces frequently walked on would wear more quickly. Sun and saltwater also bleached the deck causing light or white patches. So I guess the answer to your question depends on how long the U-boat had been at sea. I hope this helps.
