"Lee light" and "Huff Duff"

To whom it may concern:
I recently saw a documentary on "Black May,1943" and they mentioned these two devices used to hunt down the u-boats. Does anyone know just how effective these devices were? The program was entitled "Suicide Missions of WWII". By this time was it actually suicidal to be in the u-boat service?
And again, if someone could set me straight on some numbers, on this same program, they stated the actual number of men lost was 29,300 out of 39000. Are these accurate? Thankyou for any assistance.
Sincerely,
Les
