The Metox was probably a superhetrodyne receiver. I don't know for sure that it was. But if it was, the local oscillator in the receiver is generating radio frequency energy which is used to :beat" the incoming signal to produce what is called the "intermediate frequency". The IF now contains whatever information was on the incoming signal and is amplified and detected. The problem arises from the local oscillator which leaks energy onto the receiving antenna and which is then radiated just as if it were a transmitter. This leaking local oscillator energy is detectable. However the energy level is low and the signal being radiated can not be detected at any practical distance and could not therefore have been used to detect a submarine equipped with a Metox.
