Your last post is reminding me of some basic electronic knowledge. Shielding is a tricky thing even today and in those days it must have been a black art. Let me offer a hypothesis. The METOX prototype was measured for stray radiation and found to be acceptable, however, the production models contained imperfections, due to sloppy quality control or sabotage. If we further assume that each installation was not checked prior to a mission, we have a solution to the problem.
The German error was trusting a French manufacturer, something which should not have been done. Enemy factories and even enemy labor should never have been trusted with finished products, just parts and sub assemblies which could be easily inspected.
