Xray,
Just an update on your comment about the Akula being a shoddy peice of work.
When the Akula first appeared it was credited with a radiated noise level as low as
Flight III Los Angles class boats (the ones with the forward planes re-sited from the Sail to the Bow and the 12 round VLS).However numerous USN and Royal Navy sources have stated that in recent years the Akula\'s in Russian service are only as quiet as a Flight I 688 boat. These sources have speculated that the noise reduction techniques used on the Akula\'s are suffering degradation (probably as a result of the cash problems chronic to th Russisan military)The USN found that the noise reduction techniques needed on a modern SSN are Very expensive to
design/bulid and maintain....a Sturgeon calss SSN USS Geudgeon was found to be very noisey compared to her sisters. On investigation nothing intrinsic was found wrong with the sub but that the yard where she was built had not kept a close enoghh eye on quality control of sub-contractor supplied assemblies.
