Hi, Fellows!

We used ULF in the South African Navy, too. We just had to come up to about thirty meters in order to recieve the frequency, which I seem to recall was about 18 Khz. To transmit we would have to come to periscope depth and extend the whip antenna. The wire antenna, which runs from the rear of the fin to about the middle of the after casing was the one used to recieve the ULF, and in an emergency could be used on the surface for HF transmission, although tuning it for a low SWR could be a right sod in a heavy sea that kept wetting it! We did not have a ULF transmitter, only HF and of course VHF/UHF for contact with ships in company.

Underwater contact could be done by telephone, which used a modulated sonar transmission, good for a good few miles, with the limitation of the speed of sound in water.

Hope that's interesting,

Garth
