Hi Yall:
I think the reason for the Skeg/propeller/rudder guard is where the U-boat lays on the ocean bottom, that the sand/dirt/coral/rocks will not cause damage to it. Remember during operation “Paunkenschlag†or "Drumbeat" the U-boats use to spend their days laying on the ocean bottom, in the U.S.A. shipping lanes, resting the crew and only surface at dusk and start their patrols during the dark. That thick section of the guard would protect the skeg and propellers also. Another reason maybe is to prevent seaweed and debris from getting on the rudders and disabling them.
