RE: submerged targets

I have heard of successful or unsuccessful attacks made by one submarine
against a submerged sub in WWI or WWII. All the attacks have had at least one of the subs on the surface as Mr. Bruns described above. My father was a submariner and he just about fell out of his chair when he saw that in U-571. He told me afterwards that there was no way to determine depth or even range given that all they had was passive sonar. He said they would be able to figure out the bearing and even maybe heading but any shot would be total guesswork during that time period.
