Dear Rainer,
I believe that 0.71 is the specific gravity of \\\"lamp oil\\\", the very best Diesel stuff available in the forties. Furnace oil is 0.82, and this is the worst thing which could be put in a Diesel engine and still have it running. Only large, slow turning units can work smootly with that. Kerosene has been invented later: it is a mixture of gasoline and lamp oil, usually referred as JP4, which feeds aviation turbines.
I think, according to the referred boat engineering data, that the latest IXs could start their patrols with 150-200 tons of fuel, i.e. 20% of the boat displacement.
Greetings and thanks for your dedicated work.
