Hi Rainer,
I remember we discussed this briefly in relation to the marathon submerged voyage of U-977. The skipper of the boat fled to Argentina at war's end and remained submerged for 66 days. Because the torpedo tubes were loaded and the skipper refused to launch one to vacate a tube (I assume that he didn't want to be accused of attacking a merchant vessel and wanted to account for all eels initially loaded), the pillenwerfer system was used to eject human waste. An unfortunate crewman was chosen to pack it into tins similar in size to the pillenwerfer charge.
One question arises about that story, however. Why couldn't the ship's heads be used for this? They were safe to use at schnorkel depth, correct?
Regards,
Tom
