The asdic system on allied escorts had a transmitter/receiver for the 'active' pulses of the asdic and when receiving it acted as a very sensitive hydrophone. The asdic opperators could detect torpedos in the water over certain ranges and bearings (usually if the asdic was pointed in the direction of the torpedo it would hear the torpedo in between asdic pulses).
