This is a facinating subject (for some )
I'm wondering, if the Uboat crews had that valuable info at their disposal. When they spotted convoys and researched their Ship's Registry/ID manuals prior to an actual attack. Counting turns for speed determination would seem a lot quicker than plotting two timed bearings. I suppose the combination of the two only guaranteed a firing solution.
I'm guessing that Lloyds would have required the ship's owners to provide such info for insurance purposes and/or salvage/resale reasons...I donno? Tnx agn.
