Apart from being an ahead throwing weapon the squid projectile was shaped like an aerial bomb and had a very fast sinking time compared to the 10ft/sec of the standard depth charge. Squid ships had a further depth seeking asdic set which scanned in the vertical plane and which set the firing depth on the projectile at the moment of firing. It was a very effective weapon. The Loch class frigates were designed to carry the 6 barrelled version which delivered about a ton of explosive.
