Hi Patrick,
Ofc, as soon as you have your fwd spring asore when docking things are starting to be a bit less hectic. :-)) The Fleetboats' disadvantage vs the German WW2 boats was the single rudder. American skippers displayed the same pride as their German counterparts in refusing assistance of tugs etc. Not always was such refusal a wise decision.
I am surprised, that the design of modern subs do not routinely have ducted bow as well as stern thrusters incorporated as Charla suggests. Not only the big single screw nuclear boats, but also the smaller D/E or hybrids with their props aft of the rudderplanes are total pigs to maneuver. With these two tugs are practically mandatory.
