After looking in many books , including Eberhard Rossler's book THE U-BOAT I can find nothing that would confirm the galvanizing of the hull plates . With the exception of the outer conning tower skin I feel certain that this was not done and is said in mistake . If it were true I think the paint along the hull would fall off faster and I do not see pictures of workers wearing any masks while welding .
