U.S. fleet boats used an underwater (SONAR) telephone called "GERTRUDE" It was voice capable and the telegraphic key could be used also. I'm not sure when this device was first used, but the boats I rode after 1945 all had this equipment on board.That is what USS THRESHER (SSN-593) was using on her final dive in 1964.
