UBoat Vs. Destroyer

I've often read about and seen movies where UBoats are being depth charged by surface destroyers. Why was the UBoat so helpless in these situations? Couldn't the UBoat fire a spread of torpedos at the destroyer using sonar to get a bearing? Or briefly come to periscope depth?
