One more thing that hasn't been pointed out yet: The effectiviness of a depth charge was considerably reduced the deeper it exploded, because of the water pressure. Furthermore, depth charges sink at a regular speed. The deeper the u-boat was, more time the commander had to take the the boat out of the immediate danger zone of the depth charges.
