Hi Charles,
U-234 did indeed sail very late in the war for Japan carrying, among other cargo, a number of cases of uranium oxide, destined for the Japanese army atomic bomb program, but surrendered in mid-Atlantic to a US DE following the end of the war. The 2 Japanese officers accompanying the shipment committed suicide rather than surrender.
This was not the first such shipment, there were several prior, but none reached its intended destination, the Japanese I-boats or German U-boote carrying the material failed to reach the intended destination due to ULTRA keeping the Allies informed of their cargo & routing, allowing ASW forces to intercept & sink the lot.
