Was there a top and bottom of torpedos? Say you were looking at a cross section of the torpedo. Was it important to rotate the torpedo to have a certain part of the torpedo at "12 o'clock"? My guess is that the depth keeping mechanisms on the torpedo would require this, but I don't know.
