It was without doubt that the deck guns were becoming useless by mid 1942,
as these deck guns were not capable of anit-aircraft fire.
A series of suggestions & requests were made by U-boat commanders to urgently in accelerating better A/A improvements to their boats. It was a fact that the Allies at that time had gain great techically successes with ASW counter-measures on U-boats kills, which mainly came from air attacks.

However, the 88mm naval deck gun was a powerful gun used on enemy shipping in the early days of the war, but this gun is not to be confused with the German army 88mm gun, which used a different shell. The 105mm deck gun was fitted to a much wider deck on the larger U-boats. Almost all the U-boats in 1943/44 had the deck guns removed, on a small hand full still had them on their forward decks.
