The U-boats forward deck gun was already outdated by 1942. It was a lesson the German U-boat arm realized at the that time of sea warfare.
Improvements & better A/A armaments was needed in U-boats to fight off the
increased naval air attacks the Allies had developed by the use of radar fitted
into their aircrafts. This was the one of the finally defeats of Dönitz's U-boat campaigns of WWII.
