Another quote from the book........
Page 260:
"Steep angles sometimes spilled mercury from the gyro (compass); this happened so fast there was no time for a spill, but the sudden change in the axis of
rotation confused the gyro enough that it almost tumbled. The compass card
jumped about 45 degrees, and the helmsman, trying to regain his course, almost put us on a collision course with QUEENFISH."
"Stump said the view from the QUEENFISH was undescribable. Most
of his crew watched on deck as twenty-four hundred tons of ship as long as a football field hurtled into the air at twenty miles an hour."
This is the same shot used in the "SILENT SERVICE" TV series in the '50s.
The USS PICKEREL'S speedy ascent was certainly enhanced by blowing the forward group of main ballast tanks and Bow Buoancy tank.
