From Keith Gill we know that:
o "The torpedo tubes are smooth bronze but at the 11 and 5 o'clock positions there is a groove machined in to accept the ears on the torpedo impulse piston. The groove stops about 20 inches or so from the fwd end of the tube so the piston is not ejected out the front. Water pressure pushes it to the back of the tube, then the outer door is closed and tube drained."
o that the overall interior length is less than or equal to 297.5 inches.
o and that the piston weighs 77#, and is about 21 inches in diameter.
So, we can calculate:
21 inch diameter = about 348 square inches = about 2.4 square feet
77 pounds / 2.4 square feet = about 32 pounds per square foot =
about a 3/4 inch steel plate (think big garbage weight)
If true, then a nominal length of 295 inches, allowing for piston and outer door measurement error (if any), would seem reasonable.
The longest torpedo in this thread (717.5 cm / 2.54 = 282.5 in), leaving a foot for the "whisker type pistol," yes?
I know, not the specifics you sought, but close, maybe?
