The following statement concerning "Check fire! Get a new setup"
is made by Captain Enright on page 156 of his book "SHINANO":
"Bob ( LCDR. Bobczynski, his XO) later mentioned that under other skippers that had been the practice, when a full salvo of six torpedoes was being launched and no hit had been registered after the initial three were fired, to check fire at once and get a new computer setup. It was the best and quickest way to prevent the remaining torpedoes from being fired with incorrect data. In
our approach on this carrier, he had waited for four torpedoes to
be fired before calling for the new setup. It was an excellent idea
but it caught me flat-footed, we hadn't rehearsed that method
before. All I knew was that Bob had ordered the new setup at a
critical stage of the attack."
